Childhood home of East's most famous graduate to be demolished

Update: The house was demolished on Thursday, June 12, 2005.

April 16, 2005-The house that was the home of who is perhaps the best known East High alumnus is to fall within the next few days. The house where Cybill Shepherd (‘68) grew up on Highland Park Place west of Highland in Memphis is being demolished as part of the expansion of the Trezevant Manor, a continuing care retirement community.

Five houses on Highland Park west of the existing Trezevant Manor buildings are being torn down along with two on Waynoka. The retirement community plans to place additional “cottages” on the property as well as a new multi-story independent living facility (apartments) and another multi-story assisted living facility. Demolition of the houses has already begun and Shepherd’s will certainly fall within the next few days. The house was also home for Terry Shepherd (‘65) and Billy Shepherd (‘71).

The swank and modern (late 1950's) former home of former East students Scott Strauch (associated with the class of 1970), Pam Strauch (associated with the class of ‘68), and Stacy Strauch (associated with the class of ‘71) on Waynoka is also being demolished to make way for the retirement community.

Before Highland Park:

She had not yet started as an actress or model, but this was Cybill Shepherd's first home. In the late 1950's her family moved to Highland Park Place, which was razed last year for part of Trezevant Episcopal Home.

3710 Northwood 1950-1959

Cybill maintained a home in Memphis for many years, near downtown Memphis overlooking the Mississippi River. She had homes elsewhere too of course (California, etc) so she was not a full time city dweller. She sold the Memphis home in 2006 - no word on if she bought another place or not locally.

Actress Cybill Shepherd sells her bluff-top home to out-of-towners for $1.5 million. Several years ago, the Flyer included the unusually designed residence in a list of local eyesores, and now we wonder if that had anything to do with her leaving. Cybill, we were just kidding!

More Details

The home was designed by Francis Mah, who also designed the round Hyatt on Ridgeway Loop, the Southern College of Optometry and the old stacks library at the University of Memphis. If you are wondering which house on the bluffs was her, look for the round windows.
