Al's Golfdom & Al's GolfhavenThe first (and main) place was Al’s Golfdom, which occupied a good portion of the land where the Mall of Memphis stood. Al's Golfhaven opened a few years later at Raines and I55. It was one of these family-owned “roadside” attractions that just kept growing. It started as a pretty nice miniature-golf course (two 18-hole sections) and a very fine driving range. There was a “target” set out in the field, and you won something if you drove a ball through the tiny hole in the target. Later they added a nice snackbar with great milkshakes, baseball batting cages, go-kart track, a giant slide, and more. The two main hangouts for East Memphis kids (especially those from Overton) in the 1970s were Shoney’s in Eastgate and Al’s Golfdom. It all came tumbling down in the late 1970s, maybe the early 1980s, when they developed that part of South Perkins.
