Kress Building

This building has not joined Lost Memphis and hopefully it never will. The Kress chain of five-and-dime stores was founded by Samuel H. Kress, born in 1863, one of seven children of a Pennsylvania coal-mining supervisor. In 1896, he opened his first store in Memphis, Tenn. He would eventually own about 400 stores.
