Mall Security

Nov 25, 1999 - from the Commercial Appeal

"Retailers are expecting as much as 30 to 35 percent of their annual profits to roll in between now and New Year's, said Mall of Memphis general manager Ray Baxter.

'''Baxter said he doesn't wait until the holidays to increase security.

"We're pretty much at a high level most all the time," Baxter said. "It's in response to public perception about this place, things that have lingered a long time."'''

The Mall of Memphis at Perkins and American Way has had more than its share of violent crime. Two parking lot crimes were a fatal 1992 shooting of a mall employee and the 1993 wounding of another person. Last month a woman was killed after her boyfriend shot her then turned the gun on himself in the mall.

Baxter said the Mall of Memphis also employs local police to help with security and hires uniformed officers for extra duty on Saturday nights.

When violent acts occur, security officers call police then make sure shoppers aren't in danger, said Kenneth Hamilton, senior vice president of ICP International Corp., the Bannockburn, Ill. security firm contracted with Wolfchase."
